In 2023, an Indian Tamil-language action thriller film named “Leo,” also marketed as “Leo: Bloody Sweet,” emerged onto the cinema screen. it is produced by S. S. Lalit Kumar and Jagadish Palanisamy and Lokesh Kanagaraj is the director. The journey of “Leo” commenced in January 2023, when it was officially announced under the working title “Thalapathy 67,” signifying Vijay’s 67th film as the lead actor. Shortly thereafter, the official title was revealed. Principal photography kicked off in the same month, predominantly in Chennai, with intermittent schedules in the picturesque region of Kashmir. Subsequently, another shooting schedule took place in the same locations, culminating by mid-July. The film features a captivating musical score by Anirudh Ravichander, boasts cinematography by Manoj Paramahamsa, and meticulous editing by Philomin Raj.
On the 19th of October 2023, “Leo” made its global debut in both standard and IMAX formats, garnering a mixed response from critics.
The plot of the film centers around Parthiban, affectionately known as “Parthi,” who leads a content life in Theog as an animal rescuer and café owner. He shares this life with his wife, Sathya, and their two children, Siddharth (Siddhu) and Mathi (Chintu). Parthi’s tranquil life takes a dramatic turn when he’s summoned to help subdue a dangerous spotted hyena that’s causing chaos. With the assistance of Siddhu, he successfully manages to tranquilize the hyena and save the town. However, Parthi strives to avoid drawing public attention to this heroic act and decides to adopt the hyena after it calms down. The story takes a darker twist when Parthi and Chintu find themselves in the middle of a robbery at their café one night, orchestrated by a notorious gangster named Shanmugham and his henchmen. Parthi tries to appease the gangsters by offering them money, but the situation escalates when one of them makes unwelcome advances towards a female staff member. Filled with rage, Parthi takes matters into his own hands, engaging in a violent altercation with the gang members. In the heat of the moment, Parthi ends up taking their lives to protect Chintu. Although he is initially arrested, he is eventually released on grounds of self-defense, but his photo circulates in newspapers nationwide.
This incident leads to his photograph being seen by Harold Das, a notorious gangster in Telangana, who informs his elder brother, Antony Das, about Parthi. Simultaneously, Shanmugham’s relatives make attempts on Parthi and his family’s lives, prompting him to request protection from a high-ranking armed police officer from Tamil Nadu. His request is granted, and Napoleon, a recently promoted officer following his heroic actions in Trichy, is assigned to safeguard Parthi’s family. Upon meeting Parthi, Antony insists that Parthi is his long-lost son, Leo Das, presumed dead for years. Parthi vehemently denies this assertion, but Antony threatens him to accept his identity or face grave consequences.
As the narrative unfolds, Sathya delves into Parthi’s past upon Antony’s revelation, and Joshy, Parthi’s friend, also embarks on a quest to uncover Leo’s history. Through a series of investigations, it is unveiled that Antony had established a tobacco factory named Das & Co in 1999, which Harold utilized for smuggling drugs while masking it as a tobacco business. Antony’s twin children, Leo and Elisa Das, played pivotal roles in ensuring the illicit operations ran smoothly. An unexpected twist emerged when Antony, a strong believer in the occult, attempted to sacrifice Elisa based on his astrologer’s advice to ensure the success of their tobacco products. This led to an enraged Leo setting fire to Harold’s drug supplies, resulting in a clash that saw the demise of Elisa and Leo, who was presumed dead since that day.
Joshy’s investigations provide compelling evidence that Parthi is not Leo, a sentiment echoed by Sathya after her discoveries. However, Antony kidnaps Siddhu and threatens to sacrifice him since he failed to carry out the same for Elisa. A dramatic showdown ensues as Parthi and Napoleon pursue Antony and his associates. News of Antony’s demise reaches Harold, who retaliates by demanding Antony’s body in exchange for Siddhu. Parthi complies but soon discovers that Siddhu’s life is still at risk. A final battle ensues between Parthi and Harold’s men. In the midst of the chaos, Harold reveals that he has dispatched men to kill Sathya and Chintu. However, with the aid of Napoleon, Joshy, and the hyena, Parthi successfully thwarts Harold’s henchmen. In a gripping encounter, Harold’s men attack Parthi, but he manages to fend them off. Finally, in a face-off with Harold, Parthi admits his true identity as Leo Das before eliminating Harold and obliterating the entire Das & Co. factory.
In the aftermath, as peace is restored to Parthi’s family, a mysterious caller contacts him, revealing that he knows Parthi is Leo and chastises him for not taking more drastic measures against the rampant drug trade in India. Parthi, exasperated, recognizes the gravity of the situation as he contemplates his next move.
In this intense narrative, “Leo: Bloody Sweet” takes audiences on a gripping journey through the complexities of identity, family, and the pursuit of justice, exploring the thin line between heroism and vengeance.
