Badhaai Do (2022) Movie Plot:

“Badhaai Do”, which translates to “Give Congratulations”, is a remarkable 2022 film that originates from the rich cinema of India and is primarily in the Hindi language. The film is brought to life under the direction of the talented Harshavardhan Kulkarni. It was produced by the renowned Junglee Pictures and stands as a spiritual successor to the previous hit, “Badhaai Ho” from 2018. The narrative of the movie revolves around an unconventional couple engaged in a lavender marriage, featuring the skilled actors Rajkummar Rao and Bhumi Pednekar in the lead roles. The movie also showcases the performances of Gulshan Devaiah, Chum Darang, Sheeba Chaddha, and Seema Pahwa, who are all in significant supporting roles.

March 2020 was when the film was first introduced to the public. The process of principal photography was set into motion in the scenic city of Dehradun on 5th January 2021. The movie made its grand theatrical debut on 11th February 2022. Despite not achieving notable commercial success, it was showered with extensive critical praise and numerous recognitions. Specifically, at the esteemed 68th Filmfare Awards, it bagged six coveted awards, including Best Film (Critics), Best Actor for Rao, Best Actress (Critics) for Pednekar, Best Supporting Actress for Chaddha, Best Story, and Best Screenplay.

The plot is centered around Shardul Thakur, a police officer concealing his sexuality, who finds himself in the unique position of working in a women’s police precinct located in Dehradun. On one eventful afternoon, a physical education teacher named Suman “Sumi” Singh from Wynberg Allen School approaches the station. Her intention is to lodge a complaint about a man who deceived her on a lesbian dating app and is now blackmailing her. In a series of events, Shardul learns of Sumi’s secret and later proposes a mutually beneficial solution: a marriage that would help them fend off societal pressures of marriage in their 30s. Sumi, despite her initial hesitations, agrees to the proposition.

Post their honeymoon, the duo creates a facade of a conventional married couple, while Sumi begins seeing Rimjhim, who had faced familial rejection due to her sexual orientation. When complications arise with Rimjhim moving in, they navigate tricky situations and lies. Meanwhile, Shardul finds love with Guru, a bold and openly queer lawyer. The story continues to depict their challenges, especially during a family visit during the festival of Diwali, leading to a series of misunderstandings and revelations about their true selves.

The climax brings the story one year forward, where Shardul and Sumi, amidst their personal challenges, sit for an adoption ritual in their residence. Rimjhim is recognized as a third parent, signaling an unconventional but loving family structure. The event witnesses many family members, with some significant ones being absent. The story wraps up with a heartwarming scene, emphasizing acceptance and love in its truest sense.
